Professional Experience

Independent Computer/Network Consultant, Austin, TX, 1994 to Present

Provided a variety of services to customers to meet their needs. Some of these included:

§         Recommending and implementing configurations for customers’ network infrastructure equipment

§         Utilizing Cisco and Intel VPN concentrators with low-cost internet connections to alleviate the need for costly WAN connections and facilitate secure remote access to intranet resources

§         Configuring and supporting Access Control Lists (ACLs), Network Address Translation (NAT), IP Masquerading and Cisco PIX firewalls to ensure secure connectivity to the internet

§         Providing support for RedHat Linux servers & workstations, Microsoft Windows NT/2000 servers & workstations, Microsoft Windows 95/98 workstations and Macintoshes

§         Installing new hardware and software, such as printers, computer upgrades, web browsers and office applications; also provided instruction for their use

§         Adding networking functionality to existing stand-alone workstations

NowDocs, Inc., Network Administrator, Austin, TX, November 1999 to September 2001

Hired as the third IT employee in the startup.  Primarily responsible for all network design, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance and day-to-day operation.  Responsibilities and accomplishments included:

§         Designing & building the network for NowDocs’ in-house data center centered around Cisco Catalyst 6500 series switches

§         Migrating the site from a hosting data center to the in-house data center

§         Maintaining a strong internet presence with multiple BGP4-enabled DS3 or greater internet connections using Cisco 7200 series routers

§         Growing from two to four points of internet connectivity

§         Configuring and maintaining Intel SSL accelerators and load balancers as a front-end to the web site

§         Installing and maintaining an international Frame Relay and VPN-based WAN

§         Migrating from analog dialup remote access to VPN-based remote access

§         Maintaining internally and externally visible DNS on RedHat Linux servers running BIND 8

Initially hired as a Systems Administrator, responsibilities included providing support to end users, setting up computers for new employees as well as creating their accounts and installing & supporting RedHat Linux and Solaris 7 servers.

 

Three-Sixteen Technical Services, Network Engineer, Austin, TX, October to November 1999

Responsible for interfacing with customers to determine their specific needs, making recommendations to meet their needs and implementing the customer’s preferred solution.  This predominantly included inventorying customers’ hardware and software to verify its Y2K compliance, developing a plan to make it compliant and implementing it.  Also provided support for customers’ Novell Netware 3.12 and 4.x servers and Ethernet networks, including troubleshooting, applying patches, upgrading clients, and replacing/repairing defective hardware and cabling.

 

Leander ISD, Technology Specialist, Leander, TX, July 1997 to September 1999

One of two students working as paid interns who were directly and solely responsible for maintaining the computers and network at Leander High School in addition to providing district-wide support during the summers and as needed during the school year.  Responsibilities and accomplishments included:

§         Installing, configuring, managing and supporting multiple intraNetWare 4.11 servers

§         Creating and managing 2500+ objects in a distributed Novell NDS tree and designing the tree’s partitioning & replication

§         Installing, configuring and supporting 1000+ networked DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 & Macintosh workstations’ hardware & software

§         Setting up & managing ARCServe 6.x for NetWare to backup multiple intraNetWare file servers

§         Installing and managing RedHat Linux 5.1 and 5.2 as web server platforms

§         Researching and configuring IP Network Address Translation (NAT) using Cisco Routers

§         Verifying Y2K compliance of all computers, software, servers & network components and recommending a plan of action to have across-the-board Y2K compliance

§         Providing disaster recovery following a server room flood; functionality was restored for the following school day

§         Providing instruction one day a week for the Cedar Park High School Cisco Networking Academy

§         Assisting with logistics of open new schools and new labs; dealt with receiving and inventorying computers and other equipment and installing and configuring computers, network equipment and the network infrastructure, including bringing up new T1 WAN connections

Responsible for providing on-call support of intraNetWare 4.11 servers to Dell Computer Corporation during their Y2K testing efforts.  Dell’s requirement was to have someone with substantial NetWare experience available to deal with any issues that arose during testing.

Responsible for installing, configuring and supporting networked DOS, Windows 3.x & 95 and Macintosh workstations’ hardware and software in classrooms, labs and offices.
